Ahit pogi

Two weeks ago my Mom was telling me about my Dad's beard and how he didn't want to shave. "Hinde okay lang yan, maganda yan, parang si Kofi Annan", would be my Dad's answer whenever my Mom would request him to shave. This has been the standard reply for many years now everytime my Dad would get into the "feel-like-growing-a-beard/mustache/goatee" mood. The first time I heard the name, I said in my head, "who da?" Not being much of a current events person, I had to look it up. Kofi Annan is the UN Secretary General whose second term began January 2002, ends December 2006.

Funny how one night after picking me up from the MRT station, out of the blue my Mom revealed she had uncovered the reason why Kofi Annan still managed to look neat and good despite having a beard and being dark-skinned. Trying to stifle a giggle, I asked her why. "Kasi naka-suit si Kofi Annan, ang Daddy mo hindi," was her serious and thoughtful reply. I laughed and agreed she had a point.

These days the UN Secretary General is no longer referred to at home as my Dad, to the delight of my Mom, had finally reverted to his clean-shaven look. Ahit-pogi. Before I sign off, I'd like to say hello to my handsome Dad and my beautiful Mom, especially my parents (pronounced as peyrents).

Music

"Choric Song"

There is sweet music here that softer falls
Than petals from blown roses on the grass,
Or night-dews on still waters between walls
Of shadowy granite, in a gleaming pass;
Music that gentlier on the spirit lies,
Than tired eyelids upon tired eyes;
Music that brings sweet sleep down from the blissful skies
--- Alfred, Lord Tennyson
